Assistant Director

Ms Larni Montgomery has been involved in Australia’s vocational education and training (VET) sector as the chief executive officer and founder of the Department of Education’s RTO since 2012. With previous experience in the VET sector for over 20 years, Larni worked as a trainer/assessor in a private registered training organisation (RTO), as well as an RTO manager and quality officer within the Northern Territory (NT) Department of Education.

Larni is very passionate about establishing sustainable remote community programs, and for all students to receive quality training and achieve a VET qualification enabling their future employment opportunities. Living in the rural area, Larni enjoys a quiet family life with her 3 children.

Birva Shah
Continuous Improvement Manager

Birva joined RTO in January 2022 since moving to Darwin from Nhulunbuy. In her role she continuously reviews, monitors, and improves systems and practices that keep our RTO compliant with Australian national standards. Birva has been working with RTO and VET in the school environment since 2014. Birva enjoys the varied challenges that come along with this role and every day is a new day. When not at work Birva likes spending time with family, cooking and painting.

Hayley has been working in the VET sector in the NT for over 14 years. Prior to commencing in this role in 2021, she spent her training career working for private RTOs who specialized in training for the mining, civil, construction and transport and logistics Industries. Hayley is passionate about engaging with local industry and working with schools, trainers/assessors and industry representatives to design, develop and implement high quality VET programs that are industry relevant, and create meaningful employment pathways for our students. Hayley’s spare time is best spent enjoying a rural lifestyle with her family, and hitching the caravan to explore our beautiful country at every opportunity.

Megan Johnston
Senior Training Advisor

Megan has worked in the Vocational Education and Training industry since 2018, within multiple private RTOs in job roles ranging from administration assistant, training coordinator and RTO Branch Manager. Megan takes pride in being a strong leader within the team and providing excellent support for all staff, students, and industry representatives. Megan is passionate about learning and helping Territorians to make a difference whilst achieving a VET qualification which can open the door to future employment opportunities. Megan enjoys spending her spare time with her family, playing sports, and travelling.

Bo Leighton
Senior Training Advisor

Bo began her journey as a workplace trainer in 2019. In 2022, she joined the Northern Territory Government, where she worked closely with businesses to develop VET programs aimed at skilling the local community and helping individuals transition into employment or advance in their careers. In 2024, Bo joined the Department of Education's RTO, where she currently supports trainers, schools, and students through VET in schools programs. Bo is also pursuing a Bachelor of Primary Education. Her passion lies in creating diverse educational pathways for school students, recognizing that VET can offer unique opportunities for skill development and career exploration alongside traditional academic routes. Bo is committed to empowering students by showcasing how VET qualifications can enhance their future prospects, whether by providing direct entry into the workforce, supporting further education, or fostering entrepreneurial ambitions. She strives to ensure that students receive high-quality, industry-relevant training that aligns with their interests and the evolving needs of the job market. Outside of work, Bo enjoys an active lifestyle, participating in various sports, traveling, and spending quality time with family and friends.

Danielle Brown
Trainer Assessor

Danielle delivers training in rural operations and agriculture at Arid Zone Research Institute in Alice Springs. Danielle has worked for the Department of Education RTO for 6 years and is passionate about teaching young people skills that they would not otherwise learn; supporting them to grow and develop as young adults. Preparing for and attending the Alice Springs show is one of the highlights of the year, and Danielle and her students work hard to deliver their best. In her spare time Danielle likes drawing, painting and sewing.

Donald Coleman
Trainer Assessor

Donny has worked at Juno Training Centre for 14 years delivering agrifood operations, rural operations, and conservation and ecosystem management. He began his career as a carpenter and builder with a keen interest in training horses. This developed into a passion for training and Donny most enjoys empowering his students to develop their strengths, while realising how far they have already come on their journey. In his spare time he’d like to play more sports.

Joseph Cooper
Trainer Assessor

Joseph teaches agrifoods in Nhulunbuy having previously worked as a trainer and assessor for 10 years throughout Queensland, delivering and designing training programs in remote Aboriginal communities and cattle stations. Joe loves teaching agrifoods because it is a great industry to work in with lots of employment opportunities, while teaching students skills that will be useful to them all their life. Joe believes that VET training is a great way for students to gain understanding of the skills and attitude needed to succeed in employment. Joe has lived in Gove for 3 years with his wife and 4 children. When not at work he enjoys fishing and exploring the many islands around Gove.

Don Duggan
Trainer Assessor

Don delivers conservation and land management training across the most remote locations in the NT. After running his own training business across WA, QLD and remote NT for over 25 years, he was approached to deliver training for the Department of Education RTO. Don is passionate about passing on his knowledge and skills to the younger generation for the years to come. In his spare time Don works with the youth justice system mentoring young people, setting up programs and engaging with their community, as well as training youth workers with young adults in life skills.

Michael Fairweather
Trainer Assessor

Michael has trained construction at Katherine High School for almost 2 years. Michael has extensive experience in construction having worked in various roles throughout his career, including remote community work and owner/operator of his local construction business. Michael is a Saibai Islander which is located in the Top Western Cluster of Torres Strait, far north Queensland. He has a great sense of humour and establishes a great rapport with the students that he teaches. He enjoys passing on his knowledge to the next generation.

Chris Graham
Trainer Assessor

Following a military career of more than 25 years, Chris has brought his mechanics experience to the Middle Years Training Centre delivering manufacturing. Chris is passionate about delivering quality training to students and helping them enter the industry with the knowledge they need to succeed. In his spare time Chris enjoys DIY building projects at home.

Tupu Tufani
Trainer Assessor

Tupu has worked at Katherine High School for almost 2 years delivering manufacturing and engineering. Coming from the welding industry, Tupu has a unique set of skills that he can pass on to students to meet a need and skills gap in the Katherine area. Tupu is passionate about helping young people achieve successful outcomes and to help train a quality workforce into industry. Outside of work Tupu works with youth programs in his local area.

Tania is a born and bred Territorian who has grown up and worked in remote communities. Her passion for fishing and beautiful locations drove Tania to work in the hospitality and tourism industry. Tania began her training career in 2013 on the Tiwi Islands, and loves travelling to promote NT tourism and an excellence in hospitality services. Tania is passing on her knowledge and passion for the industry delivering hospitality programs to students from schools and communities in the Alice Springs area.
